The student union of the Maldives National University (MNU) Medical School have expressed concern over the order to leave Dharumavantha Hospital and have called on the government for an immediate and permanent solution to the issue.
MNU announced on Friday that it will shift the medical school from Dharumavantha Hospital building to the university's main campus.
According to MNU, the medical school was established in Dharumavantha School in 2018 on a temporary basis. The transfer to the main campus will not disrupt studies, the university said in a statement. However, the MNU Students Union issued a statement on Friday with the concerns of the medical students.
“The union has received a number of complaints from students at the School of Medicine of the National University of Maldives regarding the order to leave the building,” the statement said.
While medical school resources will be shifted to MNU's main campus, the students' union said they have received information that the temporary solution brought by MNU will significantly change the teaching arrangements of foundation studies and students of other faculties currently studying in the central administration.
“Such a change would directly and indirectly affect the educational pursuits of more than 1,000 students,” the students union said in its statement.
According to the statement:
-
A letter was sent to the President's Office on April 24
-
The letter asked to meet with President Mohammed Muizzu to share their concerns; the statement does not say whether an answer was received or not
-
The student union is working with state institutions to find a solution
“We, the students, request that the construction of the teaching hospital for the students of the School of Medicine be completed soon and permanently for the students to find a quick solution in this matter,” the statement said.
"And until such a solution is found, to allow for the students to continue their studies in the building where they are currently studying”.
MNU said in a statement on Friday that the medical school had to move to the main campus as the Dharumavantha Hospital is expanding its services and space.
Although the students have been moved to the main campus, MNU said the hospital will continue to provide practical experiences to students.
The government is working with the university to build a new campus in Hulhumale.
