2 charged over youth protest on woman's fall
Both individuals were arrested and detained for three days during a series of protests against the police’s handling of the investigation.
Abdulla Mahzoom Majid and Aishath Shiman have been charged in connection with protests held to demand justice for Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, who was found injured on the roof of a warehouse in H. Mitaz on 18 April.
Both individuals were arrested and detained for three days during a series of protests against the police’s handling of the investigation. They were later released, and the Prosecutor General’s Office has now filed charges against them in the Criminal Court.
According to the prosecution, Mahzoom has been charged under Section 120(b)(3) of the Penal Code. The charge relates to causing injury, with a basic sentence of one month and six days. The charge stems from an incident during the protest where Mahzoom allegedly struck a police officer in the chest with his left hand after police attempted to remove loudspeakers from the area.
Shiman is being charged under Section 532(a), read with subsection (c) of the same section, for obstructing the duties of a law enforcement officer. The basic sentence for the charge is four months and 24 days. The prosecution alleges that Shiman broke the police line during the removal of loudspeakers and deliberately interfered with police duties.
The protests, which drew participation from youth groups and civil society, were organised in response to public concerns over the investigation into Rasheed’s death. The case remains under investigation by the police.
