The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has confirmed that Abdulla Mahzoom Majid and Aishath Shiman, who led protests calling for justice over the death of Hawwa Yumna Rasheed, have been offered the opportunity to enter into an advisory agreement with the state.

The protests followed public concern surrounding the investigation into the fall of Yumna, who was discovered on the roof of H. Mitaz warehouse on 18 April.

Mahzoom and Shiman were arrested during the demonstrations and were initially remanded in custody for three days. They were later released, but criminal charges have since been filed against them at the Criminal Court.

According to PGO spokesperson Ahmed Shafeeu, the advisory agreement—if accepted—would allow the case to be concluded without further prosecution. However, both individuals have declined the offer. Shafeeu added that the option remains open.

The charges are as follows:

Abdulla Mahzoom Majid Charged under Article 120(g)(3) of the Penal Code, which relates to causing bodily injury.

  • Maximum sentence: 1 month and 6 days

  • Incident: Allegedly struck a police officer in the chest with his left hand and pushed him when officers attempted to remove a loudspeaker used during the protest.

Aishath Shiman Charged under Article 532(h), subsection (n) of the Penal Code, relating to obstruction of police duties.

  • Maximum sentence: 4 months and 24 days

  • Incident: Allegedly broke through the police line and obstructed an officer during the same protest when police moved to confiscate loudspeakers.

The investigation into Yumna Rasheed’s death and subsequent public demonstrations have drawn attention from civil society and rights organisations, with calls for transparency and accountability in the ongoing inquiry.
