Egg prices have almost doubled before the price of onions was controlled in the market.
Onion prices started rising in the market last October. After the price rose to MVR 550-700 earlier this month, STO brought a shipment of onions this week and started selling them to wholesalers at a controlled price.
Although onions have been sold at a controlled price, the price of eggs has risen sharply in the market before the onion price was completely controlled.
According to some traders, the price of eggs has been rising for a week now. Thus:
A case of eggs:
-
Previously: MVR 320-350
-
Currently: MVR 450-600
Eggs sold individually:
-
Previously: MVR 1.50-1.90
-
Currently: MVR 2.50
Some traders said the price of eggs rose sharply on Wednesday and Thursday due to delays in receiving shipments. Therefore, the price of the remaining egg cases in stock has been increased with the delay in the upcoming shipment.
One shop said the shipment was delayed due to bad weather. A case of eggs was sold at MVR 400 on Wednesday and increased to MVR 600 on Thursday. The delayed shipment will take about three days to arrive and the price of eggs will drop.
