Deputy prosecutor general Sameer quits
Sameer, who previously served as a High Court judge, was appointed as Deputy Prosecutor General by former Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem.
Ali Sameer on Sunday resigned from his position as Deputy Prosecutor General.
Sameer confirmed his resignation Monday to Atoll Times, but did not provide a specific reason for his departure.
Sameer, who previously served as a High Court judge, was appointed as Deputy Prosecutor General by former Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem. His appointment came a month after he stepped down from the High Court bench.
Sameer and Shameem are alumni of Al-Azhar University in Egypt, where they both pursued their legal studies before working together in the Maldives' legal system.
In terms of his legal education, Sameer holds a degree in Sharia and Law from Al-Azhar University, Egypt, and a master’s degree in Comparative Law from the International Islamic University, Malaysia. He was appointed as a High Court judge and sworn in on March 26. During his tenure, he presided over significant criminal and political cases.
Sameer’s resignation from the High Court occurred while the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) was investigating a case related to the purchase of a flat at a reduced price under the previous government. The investigation examined whether the purchase violated constitutional provisions and bypassed parliamentary oversight.
His resignation came after the JSC removed Justices Abdul Rauf Ibrahim and Abdulla Hameed from the High Court.
