Government on Thursday allocated funding in the 2025 budget for the establishment of specialised hospitals for cancer and mental health treatment, along with expanded health services across the Maldives.

Presenting the budget in parliament, finance minister Moosa Zameer emphasised the importance of enhancing the country's healthcare system to address major diseases like cancer and mental health conditions, areas in which the current health infrastructure has limitations.

The minister highlighted that strengthening and expanding healthcare facilities is necessary to enable Maldivians to receive advanced treatments domestically. Plans in the budget include initiatives to develop health infrastructure and train Maldivian health professionals.

A focus of the budget is on two major projects: establishing a specialised cancer hospital and a mental health facility. Additional allocations are set to improve rural health services and address challenges in healthcare accessibility nationwide.

Key components in the budget for healthcare development include:

  • The construction of five new hospitals to ease access to essential health services.

  • Plans to provide bone marrow transplant and organ transplant services domestically.

  • Expansion of the primary healthcare system throughout the country to enhance preventive health measures and improve population-wide health.

The previous government proposed building a cancer hospital in L. Gan, though the project is now planned for Male, while the mental health hospital will be constructed in Gan.
