President Mohamed Muizzu announced Thursday that the government will introduce new amendments to the Penal Code to enhance the investigation and prosecution of corruption and unjust enrichment within public agencies.
President Muizzu shared this update in a post on the social media platform X, highlighting the government’s commitment to transparency and good governance. The proposed amendments, which will be submitted to parliament next week, address Article 515 of the Penal Code.
The updated provision seeks to make it easier to scrutinise and hold accountable a range of public officials, including the president, ministers, members of parliament, and judges, as well as current and former public servants.
By focusing on cases of "unjust enrichment"—the act of gaining financial benefits through unethical or illegal means—the amendment aims to deter misconduct and foster a culture of accountability across all levels of government.
