3 days for budget debate; to begin on Tuesday
Finance minister Ibrahim Ameer presented a budget of MVR 42.68 billion to the parliament last week. It has a deficit of MVR 8.4 billion.
Parliament on Monday set a three-day period for debate on the proposed budget for 2023.
Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, who presided over Monday's sitting, shared details of the schedule for the budget work.
Eva, who represents Galolhu South constituency, said the budget debate will begin on Tuesday and will continue till Thursday.
"But if the debate doesn't end at 1 pm on Thursday, we will continue with the session," Eva said.
Eva requested MPs to file requests for speaking before 12pm on Thursday.
"If MPs don't come, we will finish the session at 10pm," she said.
As per the parliament's rules of procedure, the budget debate will take place only after seven days from the date of presentation of the budget. It also states that the finance minister should be allowed to respond to the objections raised by the members during the budget debate. In addition:

A joint committee comprising members of the Public Accounts Committee and the Economic Committee should review and pass the budget seven days before the end of the current session; the ongoing session of parliament will end by the end of the month

After the budget debate is over, the budget should be referred to the budget review committee
