President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has directed the relevant authorities to extend student loans to all applicants who meet the eligibility criteria under the government’s current student loan scheme.
The directive was announced following the release of the provisional list of student loan applicants earlier Tuesday. According to the Ministry of Higher Education, a total of 1,338 individuals applied for loans to pursue higher education in the Maldives and abroad. Out of these, 806 applicants have been deemed eligible.
The initial decision was to award loans to 500 applicants. However, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), President Muizzu stated that he had instructed the Higher Education Ministry to provide loan facilities to all 806 eligible individuals.
The President’s move follows previous instances under the former administration where all qualified applicants were granted loans, regardless of the initial quota.
The Ministry has now opened a complaints window regarding the provisional list, with the deadline for submissions set for 3 August.
