Maldives' High Commissioner to Pakistan, Mohamed Thoha, has been dismissed for holding a meeting with a representative of the Afghan Taliban.
The meeting has garnered international attention since photos surfaced on Thursday showing Thoha with Taliban's envoy to Pakistan Sardar Ahmad Shakeeb.
The foreign ministry announced on Sunday that action would be taken against him for the ambassador’s unauthorised engagement with the Taliban.
According to a reliable source speaking to Atoll Times, Thoha has been removed from his post, and the government has instructed him to return to the Maldives.
The ministry clarified that the meeting was conducted without the approval of the Maldives government, and necessary steps have been taken to address the situation. However, no details of the official measures have been disclosed.
Thoha was appointed as the ambassador to Pakistan in June, following his earlier appointment to Saudi Arabia in May.
