Housing ministry announced Saturday that seven islands have been designated as urban centres under the administration’s new development framework.
The designated islands include R. Ungoofaru, B. Eydhafushi, Lh. Naifaru, ADh. Mahibadhoo, F. Nilandhoo, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, and L. Fonadhoo.
This initiative aligns with President Mohamed Muizzu’s manifesto, which proposed the establishment of seven urban centres and a development zone in both the northern and southern regions. Each designated area will have tailored development plans.
In the Northern Development Zone, which comprises areas including HA. HDh. and Shaviyani atolls, the main hub is set to be HDh. Kulhuduffushi.
In the Southern Development Zone, encompassing regions like GA. GDh. Addu and Fuvahmulah, Addu has been identified as the primary hub.
During the presidential election campaign, President Muizzu announced several of these urban centres, including Ungoofaru, Nilandhoo, and Kudahuvadhoo.
