In a significant operation conducted by Maldivian authorities, a Sri Lankan fishing boat was seized near Hdh. Makunudhoo in the early hours of yesterday morning, carrying an alarming 468.6 kilograms of drugs. The discovery underscores the seriousness of the drug trafficking problem in the region and highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to combat it.

The operation began at 12:45 am when the Coast Guard intercepted the suspicious vessel. Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau confirmed that the ship was taken into custody and brought to Hdh. Kulhudhufushi, where a joint search by police and military personnel uncovered a substantial quantity of illegal drugs.

The drugs recovered from the vessel include:

  • 344 kg of methamphetamine

  • 124.6 kg of cocaine

The street value of the seized drugs is estimated at MVR 1 billion, marking one of the largest drug busts in recent memory.

Authorities have detained individuals aboard the vessel, believed to be illegal immigrants involved in the smuggling operation. Investigations are ongoing to determine their role and any connections to larger drug trafficking networks operating in the region.

President Mohamed Muizzu took to X (formerly Twitter) to reiterate his administration’s commitment to eradicating drugs from the Maldives.

“Ridding Maldives of drugs is one of the top priorities of this government,” the President stated, expressing gratitude to law enforcement agencies for their dedication and success in the operation.

The Maldives has long struggled with drug trafficking due to its strategic location in the Indian Ocean. This operation represents a significant victory for law enforcement and underscores the importance of coordinated efforts between the police and military.

As the investigation unfolds, the government has promised to intensify its crackdown on drug trafficking, sending a clear message that illegal activities will not be tolerated in the Maldives.
