Supreme Court appeal on restricting political lawyers against state

Ragib was dismissed from his position on Monday after filing a constitutional case in the High Court against the President's Office.

A High Court ruling prohibiting political appointees from representing cases against the state while holding office has been appealed to the Supreme Court.

The decision followed an incident involving Mohamed Ragib, a former deputy minister of environment, who represented a man accused of sexually assaulting a child in a position of trust.

The Supreme Court registry confirmed that the appeal, filed against the Attorney General's Office, was submitted on Wednesday. The court has yet to decide whether to accept the appeal for review.

Ragib was dismissed from his position on Monday after filing a constitutional case in the High Court against the President's Office. The case sought to annul the decision to grant city status to GDh. Thinadhoo, citing the population requirement of 10,000 as unmet.

Despite the High Court ruling, Ragib also represented Hassan Mamdooh in a case before the Criminal Court. Mamdooh faces charges related to the alleged fraudulent sale of flats at K-Park flats. The Criminal Court allowed Ragib to act as counsel in the case, raising further questions about the enforcement of the High Court's decision.
