Police have summoned a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist in connection with a social media post alleged to contain threatening language and incite fear.
MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail shared the police summons on Saturday, which directed party activist Hussain Shafiu to appear at the police station at 1:30 pm on Sunday. The investigation concerns a post made from the handle @charly_thuthu that reportedly used offensive language and caused alarm.
Fayyaz criticised the move, stating that expressing dissatisfaction with the government is increasingly being treated as a serious offence. He described the summoning as an attempt to silence dissent.
“Dictators will always suppress the voice of the people and prevent them from expressing their views. However, ideas and thoughts cannot be locked away,” Fayyaz said.
Police have not issued additional details regarding the investigation or the specific content of the post in question.
