West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef on Wednesday alleged that the government was behind efforts to Speaker Mohamed Nasheed from the parliament through court.

On Wednesday, an attorney had filed a constitutional case in the Supreme Court seeking Nasheed's removal from parliament. This is because Nasheed is representing Sri Lanka with their delegation at the ongoing COP27 summit in Egypt, which is said to be unconstitutional.

Atoll Times did not avail details of the case filed in the Supreme Court.

Defending Nasheed, Hassan tweeted that he believed there was no legal basis in removing Nasheed from the membership, and that the government was at the bottom of it.

"Since they did not get the votes to remove Nasheed in parliament, they have now started the process so that Nasheed can be removed through the court," said the MP, who was earlier the chairperson of MDP and one of Nasheed's closest aides.

"I believe that even if there is no legal basis in it, the government is at the bottom of it."

Nasheed left for the COP summit on Friday. Regarding the visit, parliament said he will attend COP27 as a representative of the Sri Lankan national delegation.

Vice President Faisal Naseem and environment minister Aiminath Shauna arrived at the COP Summit on behalf of the government to represent Maldives.

Former attorney general Dr Mohamed Munawwar, the attorney general of Nasheed’s regime Diyana and other lawmakers have criticised his representing Sri Lanka at the COP summit.
