MDP seeks extraordinary parliament sitting over ministry fire
A criminal investigation into the incident has been requested, and the MDP also plans to file a separate case with the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
Opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) on Monday announced plans to request an extraordinary sitting of parliament following the fire that damaged the housing ministry, construction ministry, and environment ministry on Thursday.
The fire at the housing ministry was brought under control after six hours. In addition to the housing ministry, the construction ministry, and the Green Building which houses the environment ministry were also affected.
At a press conference Monday morning, MDP Parliamentary Group Leader, Hithadhoo South MP Ibrahim Nazil stated that the party would seek an extraordinary sitting to address the fire and other issues raised by the public.
"The rules of parliament have been changed, and we need the signatures of 31 MPs to hold an extraordinary sitting. We cannot reach that number alone. Therefore, we are asking for the help of the PNC," Nazil said.
With 93 members in parliament, only 12 represent the MDP, while the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) holds a majority with 75 seats.
A criminal investigation into the incident has been requested, and the MDP also plans to file a separate case with the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
