Police on Monday cancelled summons issued to R. Dhuvaafaru councillor Mariyam Yashfa over her remarks at the an opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rally at the party's camp in Male last month.
Yashfa was ordered to appear before the police on Tuesday. The summons was related to an ongoing investigation into her remarks at a rally, where she was accused of making statements that could potentially endanger the life of the president.
Yashfa received a call from the police at 5:11 pm on Monday informing her that her scheduled appearance for 10:30 am on Tuesday had been cancelled.
“They said I didn’t have to appear tomorrow,” Yashfa told the media.
The cancellation of Yasfa’s police appearance comes amidst growing political tension within the country. Her performance at the latest MDP rally, titled 'People in Defence of the Constitution,' where she recited another poem, has been seen by many as an act against perceived governmental overreach and an affirmation of her stance on democratic principles. The poem she recited at the Dhandikoshi Jagaha has added fuel to the controversy, as it reiterated her commitment to constitutional rights and freedoms.
