Six opposition MDP members arrested during last Friday’s protest in Malé have begun a hunger strike while in police custody.

Eight protesters, including two former MDP parliamentarians, were arrested during the demonstration. Six of them were remanded in custody for 15 days.

MDP Legal Committee Chair Ahmed Mauroof said in a post on X on Tuesday that the detainees began the hunger strike to protest what they described as their illegal detention and unequal treatment while in custody.

Mauroof also alleged that the police investigation into the detainees was being delayed and that they were not receiving the medical attention they required.

MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail expressed concern over the development and called on authorities to ensure that the detainees are afforded their constitutional rights.

In a statement released on social media on Tuesday evening, police said that the Police Professional Standards Command was monitoring the situation. The statement also noted that the National Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives had been informed of the hunger strike.
