The Maldives Police Service clarified on Thursday that Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), has not been charged in connection with allegations of improper allocation of land under the Binveriya scheme.
The investigation was launched after documents circulated on social media suggested that land was allocated to Fazul's brother, who reportedly did not qualify under the scheme.
The Binveriya scheme is a government initiative aimed at providing land to eligible citizens, and any deviations from its guidelines have been a matter of public concern.
At a press briefing Thursday evening, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdullah Shareef addressed the allegations, stating that no HDC personnel, including Fazul, have been implicated in wrongdoing at this stage. Shareef assured the public that there is no evidence indicating that HDC attempted to destroy or tamper with any evidence related to the case.
"Fazul has not been charged, and we do not intend to seize anyone's passport at this time," Shareef said.
He further emphasised that investigative measures would be taken if deemed necessary, including restrictions on travel.
The police assured that the investigation is ongoing and will be conducted transparently. Shareef also underscored the importance of refraining from spreading unverified information that could undermine the integrity of the investigation.
This statement follows heightened public scrutiny of the allocation process under the Binveriya scheme and the calls for greater accountability in public administration. The police have urged the public to remain patient as they continue to probe the matter.
