Electronic devices seized in probe on land scandal
They also seized Fazeel's phone during the investigation.
Authorities have ramped up their investigation into the recent land controversy, seizing electronic devices belonging to 20 individuals, including high-profile figures such as former Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed and his brother, Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, Deputy Managing Director of the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).
The controversy, which involves allegations of land being improperly allocated to Fazeel, came to light last week through social media posts, sparking widespread public scrutiny. Fazul, who had been under suspension, resigned from his post on Saturday.
The Maldives Police Service, acting under court orders, searched Fazul’s residence and confiscated several electronic devices. They also seized Fazeel's phone during the investigation.
However, the police have not disclosed the exact number or types of items seized or provided details on the individuals whose passports were confiscated.
In a message on Wednesday, police confirmed the confiscation of electronic devices as part of the investigation, but further specifics regarding the evidence gathered remain under wraps.
The scandal has triggered a leadership crisis within the HDC. Additionally, 15 senior employees of the corporation were laid off but were reinstated later under suspension.
