Police, HDC’s new chief discuss land, flat scam
Mauroof’s appointment signals a renewed focus on transparency and accountability within HDC.
Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau held discussions with the newly appointed Managing Director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Mauroof Jameel, on Monday regarding ongoing investigations into alleged fraud in the ‘Binveriya’ and ‘Gedhoruveriyaa’ housing schemes introduced under the previous government.
The meeting, which took place a day after Mauroof Jameel assumed office as HDC’s Managing Director, highlighted the growing urgency to address corruption allegations tied to these programs.
Police have intensified their probe into the ‘Binveriya’ and ‘Gedhoruveriyaa’ schemes following accusations of mismanagement and corruption involving senior officials of HDC. Among the key figures under scrutiny is former Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, whose tenure has come under question over allegations of fraud and abuse of power. The previous HDC board members are also implicated in the ongoing investigation.
In addition, Fazul’s brother, Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, who served as the Deputy Managing Director of Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), has been suspended. Reports allege that Fazeel benefited improperly from land allocations in Phase Two of Hulhumalé, despite being declared ineligible for land under the housing scheme.
As part of the investigation, authorities have taken measures, including the seizure of several individuals' passports to prevent them from leaving the country.
