Customs destroyed 582 kilograms of sharks and rays on Sunday at the Thilafushi waste disposal site.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Customs confirmed that the prohibited items were discovered after a tip-off regarding an attempt to smuggle the items out of the country.

The export of shark and ray species is restricted under the Control of International Trade in Endangered Species Act.
Additionally, regulations under the fisheries sector prohibit the catch, use, extraction, and killing of these species.
