A foreign fishing boat that illegally entered the Maldives' exclusive economic zone was recovered on Thursday with the assistance of a drone operated by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
The vessel was detected during a routine aerial surveillance operation.
The fishing boat, which was found to be operating unlawfully in the Maldives' oceanic territory, was located by the MNDF’s drone This drone is part of a broader initiative to enhance the surveillance and monitoring of the Maldives' extensive maritime borders.
After being detected, the boat was apprehended by the Maldives coastguard.
This incident marks the second time in recent weeks that the MNDF has successfully used drone technology to locate and recover foreign vessels involved in illegal fishing activities within Maldivian waters. Last month, a similar operation led to the capture of another foreign fishing boat.
The Maldives government has been taking increasingly stringent measures to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
