A Japanese lawmaker, Toshiyuki Adachi, passed away while snorkelling at a resort in Lhaviyani Atoll, Maldives.
The incident occurred at 8:33 am on Friday, according to a statement from Maldives Police Service.
The 70-year-old man was found unresponsive in the sea. Police have confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway but have not provided further details.
Japanese media outlet Nippon reported on Saturday that Adachi, a member of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, was on vacation in the Maldives at the time of the incident.
Adachi, a native of Hyogo Prefecture, began his political career as vice minister for engineering affairs at Japan's land ministry before being elected to the House of Councillors in 2016.
