Health Protection Agency (HPA) is monitoring the increase in respiratory diseases reported in China, following concerns about a high number of cases in the country, especially during winter.

In response to reports of a state of emergency declared in China due to the outbreak, the HPA has issued a statement reassuring the public that these are common respiratory illnesses, including influenza, RSV, rhinovirus, adenovirus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and human metapneumovirus.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed an increase in respiratory diseases in parts of China since November, attributing the rise to seasonal factors common in cold-weather regions.

The HPA has advised the public to remain vigilant as respiratory illnesses are also expected to rise in the Maldives during this period, particularly with travellers returning from Umrah and other international destinations.

The HPA has provided the following guidance:

  • Individuals with symptoms such as fever and cough should wear masks in public and avoid visiting vulnerable groups, including the elderly and infants.

  • Those experiencing difficulty breathing, chest pain, unusual fatigue, or prolonged symptoms are encouraged to seek medical advice.

China remains a key tourism destination for Maldivians, and the country has welcomed over 200,000 Chinese tourists last year. Travellers and residents are advised to follow preventive measures to reduce the spread of respiratory diseases.
