The EPA urged all parties to comply with environmental regulations to prevent potential damage to sensitive ecosystems

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Wednesday announced that it will take action against individuals and entities using machinery to extract sand from areas designated for essential purposes without proper authorisation.

In a statement, the EPA stated that it has received multiple complaints regarding illegal sand removal in atolls.

The announcement highlighted the following concerns:

  • Sand is being extracted using machinery for various purposes, including commercial activities.

  • Extraction of sand from essential areas must be carried out without the use of machinery.

  • If machinery is required for dredging or sand extraction, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) must be conducted in accordance with established regulations.

The EPA emphasised its commitment to enforcing these rules.

“The agency will continue to take action against those who violate the above rules and regulations,” the statement read.

The EPA urged all parties to comply with environmental regulations to prevent potential damage to sensitive ecosystems and ensure sustainable resource management.
