EC receives 300 complaints over fake membership forms
Zakariyya also noted that both the PNC and MDP have recently raised concerns with the EC regarding these issues.
Elections Commission (EC) has received approximately 300 complaints from private individuals alleging the submission of fake membership forms in the names of various people.
These complaints span multiple political parties, including the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Progressive National Congress (PNC), Jumhooree Party (JP), Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Corporation (MITDC), and Adhaalath Party.
EC member Hassan Zakariyya confirmed that the issue of fraudulent forms has been reported across all parties.
“This is not limited to a specific party. Over the past six months, we have received around 300 complaints from the public regarding fake membership forms submitted by various parties,” Zakariyya said.
He highlighted key points regarding the issue:
-
All parties have been involved in submitting fake forms over the past six months.
-
Fraudulent forms are rejected, and action is taken against the responsible parties.
-
The surge in fake forms is often linked to parties attempting to meet membership thresholds, such as the 10,000-member requirement or avoiding dissolution for having fewer than 3,000 members.
-
Some cases have been referred to the police for investigation.
Zakariyya also noted that both the PNC and MDP have recently raised concerns with the EC regarding these issues.
While fake membership forms have been reported for over a week, no comments have been issued by the involved parties. The issue follows a large-scale membership campaign launched by one party late last year.
