As the National Meteorological Agency (MET) has predicted further heavy rainfall starting Monday afternoon, Male city council on Sunday announced the formation of a disaster committee aimed at mitigating the potential impacts of severe weather.

The city’s early-year weather pattern has been marked by intense rainfall. After a heavy downpour at the start of the year, conditions briefly improved. However, just on Saturday, rain returned, causing flooding in several parts of the city and increasing concerns about further disruptions.

In response to these weather challenges, the city council took to social media tonight, via a post on X, confirming the establishment of a disaster committee. This committee’s primary mission will be to prepare the city for the worsening conditions expected over the coming days, ensuring that timely action is taken to minimize damage and protect the public.

The MET Office has warned that rain clouds are beginning to form near the Maldives, which is expected to bring heavy rain and thundershowers to parts of the country from Wednesday through Friday. The forecast includes:

  • Heavy rain and thundershowers: Particularly in certain areas, with an increased risk of localized flooding.

  • Rough seas: Strong winds and waves are likely to affect coastal regions, posing a hazard to shipping and maritime activities.

  • Clearing weather: Rainfall is expected to ease off by Saturday, but until then, the country may experience prolonged and intense weather conditions.

In light of this forecast, the city council is urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
