Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef on Saturday condemned remarks that described the Maldivian people as individuals who take to the streets to overthrow their elected government.

The statement came in response to former Home Minister Umar Naseer’s comments on a TV program, where he suggested that the people would rise up to overthrow the government if it went wrong.

In an "X" post, Vice President Latheef emphasized that such descriptions were disrespectful and unjust, accusing those making such claims of mocking the Maldivian people by calling them "uncivilized" and "far from democracy."

Latheef stressed that President Mohamed Muizzu's administration welcomes constructive criticism, an essential quality for any leader dedicated to serving their country and people. He also pointed out that the people of the Maldives deserve respect, not disparagement.

Umar Naseer, who was once part of the opposition during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s tenure, had referenced the street protests during Nasheed’s rule as a precedent, suggesting that President Muizzu's government could also face similar unrest.
