Parliament on Monday approved the re-appointment of four ministers following a cabinet reshuffle initiated by President Mohamed Muizzu.

The changes, which include the merger of ministries and the reassignment of responsibilities, were confirmed during an extraordinary sitting.

The reshuffle followed the abolition of the Ministry of Housing on December 26, with its housing-related functions transferred to the Ministry of Construction. Planning-related functions previously under the Ministry of Housing were reassigned to the Ministry of Finance.

The approved re-appointments are as follows:

  • Dr Ali Haider: Former Housing Minister, now appointed as Minister of Higher Education.

  • Dr Mariam Mariya: Former Minister of Higher Education, now appointed as Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare.

  • Moosa Zameer: Appointed as Minister of Finance and Planning, overseeing the expanded mandate.

  • Dr Abdulla Muththalib: Appointed as Minister of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure.

The re-appointments were discussed during the first extraordinary sitting held on Thursday and were brought to a vote during the second session on Monday.

The voting outcomes were as follows:

  • Haider: Approved with 63 votes in favour; six against.

  • Mariya: Approved with 70 votes in favour; no opposition.

  • Muththalib: Approved with 70 votes in favour; no opposition.

  • Zameer: Approved with 69 votes in favour; no opposition.

The reassignment of Mariya to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare follows the resignation of her predecessor, Dr Aishath Rameela, who stepped down due to health reasons.
