President Mohamed Muizzu announced Tuesday that the country’s healthcare facilities will soon be equipped with the best brands of medical equipment and machinery, enhancing the quality of services provided to citizens.
Speaking during a visit to Raa Atoll’s Angolhitheem, the President highlighted the government's commitment to ensuring the availability and continuous operation of high-quality healthcare resources.
"We are working to ensure that the equipment in our health facilities remains functional and effective," President Muizzu said.
He emphasized that the government is making significant efforts to ensure that the necessary reagents and resources required for the operation of these medical devices are readily available, addressing a critical challenge faced by healthcare facilities, particularly in rural areas.
The President also highlighted the government's focus on making essential medicines available in bulk at affordable prices, alongside the improvement of medical equipment in rural health centers and hospitals.
"The equipment in these facilities will be of the highest quality, sourced from world-renowned brands," he added.
Under the new initiative, the government aims to procure a large quantity of medical equipment and supplies, which will be distributed across numerous islands to ensure that health centers are well-equipped and prepared to handle patient needs.
The President explained that bringing in top-tier brands of equipment would streamline operations, reduce long-term costs, and ensure more reliable and efficient service.
"It is often difficult to find spare parts and other resources for existing brands of medical equipment, especially in remote areas," the President pointed out. "When repairs are required frequently, it becomes expensive. While there may be a higher initial cost, investing in quality equipment upfront will ultimately save money in terms of maintenance and repairs in the future."
The President also stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the medicines being distributed across the country.
"The drugs we are procuring are registered with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) listed or stringent regulatory authorities, and meet the standards of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA)," he noted.
As part of this initiative, the government will purchase medicines directly from reputable manufacturers to guarantee their safety and quality. The President reassured the public that every step of the supply chain, from manufacturing to delivery, will be monitored to ensure that the medicines reach patients without compromise.
