Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reaffirmed India's commitment to strengthening relations with the Maldives, emphasizing cooperation in areas of mutual benefit.

His remarks came in response to Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s post on X (formerly Twitter), in which Muizzu extended his best wishes to India on the occasion of its 76th Republic Day.

Reposting President Muizzu’s message, Modi expressed his appreciation and reiterated India's readiness to deepen bilateral ties.

"I agree with you on the long-standing close relationship between India and the Maldives. India is ready to further strengthen our friendship and cooperation in areas that benefit both nations," Modi stated.

India and the Maldives have shared a historically strong and cooperative relationship based on mutual respect and trust. The Maldives has long recognized the significance of its ties with India, given their geographical proximity and shared regional interests.

However, relations between the two nations experienced a brief strain early in President Muizzu’s administration, following derogatory social media remarks made by three Maldivian deputy ministers about Prime Minister Modi. The incident led to tensions, but both nations took diplomatic steps to restore and strengthen their partnership.

In a move towards reconciliation, President Muizzu visited India last October at the invitation of Indian President Droupadi Murmu. The visit underscored both countries' willingness to work together and reaffirm their diplomatic ties.

The renewed commitment to stronger bilateral ties is expected to focus on several key areas, including:

  • Economic and Trade Partnerships: Enhancing trade agreements and investment opportunities between the two nations.

  • Security and Defense Cooperation: Strengthening maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.

  • Infrastructure Development: Collaborating on major infrastructure projects in the Maldives with Indian support.

  • Tourism and Cultural Exchange: Expanding tourism and cultural engagement, which is crucial given India's significant role in Maldives' tourism industry.
