Elections Commission (EC) has officially dissolved the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), a party that has been active in the country’s political landscape for over a decade.

EC member and spokesperson Hassan Zakariyya confirmed to Atoll Times on Thursday that the dissolution process has been completed following legal procedures.

"The decision will be gazetted later today," he said.

With this decision, PPM's name and logo have been removed from the register of political parties published on the EC's website. The party is now listed among dissolved political parties.

The Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), led by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, was also dissolved on Wednesday for failing to meet the minimum membership requirement of 3,000 members. Other parties previously dissolved include the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and the Labour Party.

PPM was dissolved following a decision by its senate in December. The decision was taken in line with instructions from coalition leader President Mohamed Muizzu, after an amendment to the party’s charter.

PPM was established on October 27, 2011, by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom after a split from DRP. Key milestones in the party’s history include:

  • Maumoon Abdul Gayoom served as the party’s first president.

  • The party's first presidential candidate was former President Abdulla Yameen, Maumoon’s half-brother.

  • PPM won the first presidential and parliamentary elections it contested.

  • When the current administration took office, PPM had more than 30,000 members, but by the end of last year, its membership had declined to 12,000.
