The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Tuesday announced a rally outside the parliament building on Thursday, coinciding with the opening sitting of their year’s parliament and President Mohamed Muizzu’s second presidential address.

The protest is scheduled to begin at 9 AM near the parliament, as the president delivers his address inside.

The MDP has frequently demonstrated against the government’s policies, with the most recent major protest occurring last Friday night, where party supporters marched through the streets calling for President Muizzu’s resignation.

Last October, the MDP gathered outside the parliament to protest delays in handing over land plots and housing flats in Malé as per the agreements made by the previous administration. However, the police dispersed the crowd, citing the area as a designated ‘green zone’ where protests are not permitted. It remains to be seen how authorities will handle the planned rally this time.

President Muizzu’s address on Thursday will mark his first presidential statement to the  20th parliament.

As mandated by the constitution, his address will outline the current state of the nation and the government’s plans for addressing key challenges.

His previous presidential address was delivered during the 19th parliament’s final session last year.
