An amendment to the Housing Bill has been proposed to require the publication of details on how applicants are awarded points when the list of beneficiaries under a government housing project is released.
The amendment was proposed by Galholhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim, who submitted the changes in a letter to the Speaker of Parliament. The bill is currently under review at the committee stage.
The proposed provisions would require the Housing Ministry to publish a full list of applicants under social housing programmes. According to Mohamed Ibrahim, the list should include the applicant’s full name, permanent address, eligibility status and, where applicable, the reason for ineligibility, as well as the breakdown of points awarded.
The call for transparency follows controversy during the release of the first 4,000 recipients of the previous government’s Binveirya scheme. At the time, the absence of clear information on how points were distributed led to public protests inside the Housing Ministry.
