The Maldivian government has announced a dual approach—economic strategies and religious guidance—to prevent commodity prices from surging during the upcoming Ramadan. This assurance was given by Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed at the fourth session of the 'Ahaa Forum,' where public concerns were addressed.

During the forum held Saturday night, a concerned citizen raised the issue of rising prices during Ramadan, questioning whether the government had plans to control the costs of essential goods. The citizen cited the example of lemons and carrots reaching MVR 100 per kilogram in previous years.

Responding to the concern, Shaheem emphasised the importance of kindness, compassion, and mercy in Islam, particularly in business dealings. He referenced Quranic teachings that encourage ethical trade practices that benefit both traders and consumers.

Shaheem highlighted that while prices should be kept in check, traders should not be put in a position where they suffer losses. He assured that he would continue to advocate for fairness through sermons, prayers, and public advice to promote responsible business conduct during Ramadan.

Following Shaheem’s response, Saeed outlined the government's measures to regulate prices. He revealed that a policy has been formulated under the president’s directive, covering 100 basic household goods and an extended list of 183 essential items. Of these, 54 were identified as critical during Ramadan.

Saeed reassured the public that the government is prepared to intervene if there are any unreasonable price hikes. He stressed that businesses should not take advantage of Ramadan to increase prices unfairly. A business council has been established to facilitate dialogue between the government and traders to ensure price stability.

“We will closely monitor Ramadan prices. If we detect any unjustified increase, we will take immediate action,” Saeed asserted.
