Environment Minister Thorig Ibrahim has stated that the government aims to plant more than one million trees this year as part of the national project to plant five million trees within the next five years.

Speaking during the ‘Ahaa Forum’ Saturday night, Thorig responded to a question regarding the initiative, which was launched on Environment Day on 5 June last year. He stated that approximately 450,000 trees had been planted by the end of last year and that the project would continue this year.

“We are looking to plant more than a million trees this year. Our target is two million, but otherwise, we aim to reach at least one million and work towards the larger goal,” Thorig said.

He further stated that plans are in place to achieve the five million tree target by the end of the five-year period.

When asked whether almond trees are included in the project and whether they could be commercially grown in resorts, Thorig stated:

  • The project includes 90 species of trees, and resorts are encouraged to plant these species.

  • Almond trees are already grown in Malé and in atolls by some individuals.

  • Those interested in growing almond trees commercially should engage directly with resorts.

  • While almond trees are an option, the focus is on planting species that are well-suited to the Maldivian environment and easy to cultivate.

Thorig reiterated that the initiative is a key commitment of President Mohamed Muizzu, aimed at increasing greenery across the country. He stated that public support for the programme has been strong.

Additionally, he announced that a mobile application is being developed to track the planted trees. The application will allow users to tag trees and provide information on their location and the individuals who planted them.
