Parliament on Monday approved the appointments of the Vice President of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the President and Vice President of the Elections Commission (EC).

The appointments were made to fill vacancies in both commissions.

The EC vacancies arose following a no-confidence vote against its Vice President Ali Nashath and member Mohamed Asif. The ACC Vice President’s post became vacant after the resignation of Abdul Salam and Commission Member Thoha Mohamed last November, ahead of a scheduled no-confidence vote.

The following names were submitted for approval to the EC:

  • Mohamed Zahid – President

  • Abdul Rahman Solah Rasheed – Vice President

Voting results in Parliament:

  • Mohamed Zahid – 68 members in favour, none against

  • Abdul Rahman Solah Rasheed – 69 members in favour, none against

The President also nominated Commission Member Abdulla Nashid for the position of ACC Vice President. Nashid was among the most recently appointed members of the commission. His appointment was approved unanimously with 69 votes in favour.

This marks the first time the President has appointed individuals to these positions following amendments to the laws granting him the authority to appoint the chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of the commissions.

Parliament had previously approved the appointment of Solah and Zahid as EC members on 16th of last month.
