The Independent Institutions Committee of the parliament said on Tuesday that members from the Civil Service Commission (CSC), the Election Commission (EC) and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) are being removed for alleged violations of ethical standards and yielding to outside influence.
In a letter sent to the speaker of the parliament, the committee recommended referring the members to the standing committee for further action. The proposed removals include:
-
CSC Chairman Mohamed Naseeh
-
ACC Vice President Abdul Salam and member Thoha Mohamed
-
EC Vice President Ali Nashath, and members Mohamed Asif and Mohamed Zahir
The letter outlines that two cases have been filed, alleging violations of the ACC Act.
The provisions state that members of the commission must perform their duties without fear or influence, and the commission should not pursue any direct or indirect interest in cases or policies. Violations of these rules can lead to removal from office.
The complaint filed with the Independent Institutions Committee claims that the named members have acted contrary to their responsibilities, as set out in the relevant laws. The CSC Act and the EC Act state that a member found in violation of the disciplinary rules can be deemed to have committed an act that is inappropriate for their position.
In response to these allegations, parliament is set to begin the process of removing the members from office. Additionally, work is underway to amend the laws governing these commissions to grant the president the authority to appoint the chairman and vice-chairman of both the ACC and the EC.
