Nineteen Members of Parliament (MPs) from the People’s National Congress (PNC), including Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem, are set to pursue a law degree.

The agreement was formalised on Monday when Parliament signed a partnership with the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) to provide legal courses tailored for MPs.

The initiative comes as part of an effort to enhance the legal knowledge and qualifications of MPs. According to a statement from the PNC on Tuesday, eight members of the party are currently enrolled in an advanced certificate in law, a program that spans one year.

A PNC official shared with Atoll Times that, under the agreement with IUM, a total of 27 members from the party will embark on their studies in law. The programme includes:

  • Advanced Certificate: 8 members

  • Bachelor’s Degree: 19 members

Among those enrolling in the bachelor’s programme is Speaker Abdul Raheem. The official confirmed that Speaker Abdul Raheem is eligible for the law degree programme, having previously completed a certificate-level four course.

“There must be a minimum of four certificate levels required to pursue a bachelor’s degree,” the official explained.

IUM has designed this programme in accordance with the Qualification Authority’s standards. The first phase of the programme, the advanced certificate, has already begun this week, while the bachelor’s degree courses will commence next week.
