The Parliament has begun a two-month recess following the final sitting of the year Wednesday.

The third session of Parliament normally concludes in November. However, this year’s session was extended by one week to complete pending legislative work.

Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdullah closed Wednesday's sitting and presented statistics on the work carried out during the session.

According to the Speaker:

  • 28 sittings were held, totalling about 64 hours

  • Committees held 143 meetings, spending about 120 hours

  • 15 bills were passed

  • 29 questions were put to ministers

  • 16 cases submitted by the Government and 9 cases submitted by the Presidency were concluded

Addressing the chamber, Abdul Raheem said he hoped the recess would provide members and their families with useful time away from work. He expressed confidence that members would return with new ideas and contribute effectively in the coming year. He also thanked members for their work throughout the year.

He noted that the 20th Parliament would continue to function as a forum of cooperation, unity and national interest.

Parliament is scheduled to reconvene in February after the two-month break.
