The case against Ismail Latheef, a doctor at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and husband of Supreme Court Justice Dr Azmiralda Zahir, has been filed after remaining under review at the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) for several days.
Latheef was arrested for being at a massage parlour in December. The Supreme Court, with a full bench that includes Azmiralda, has also begun hearing a constitutional matter related to an amendment.
Sources indicate that discussions took place at the PGO to determine whether prosecution was viable. The case was officially filed on Monday.
A letter sent to Latheef stated that the case was filed because the PGO decided not to proceed due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
Following speculation on social media suggesting that Azmiralda had influenced Criminal Court judges to prevent his detention, Latheef addressed the matter in a post on ‘X’ on Tuesday.
He confirmed that he regularly receives massages and acknowledged his arrest. However, he denied that Azmiralda had intervened in the case, stating that she only became aware of it after he was presented in court for a bail decision.
Latheef said he was released due to a lack of evidence and that police had acknowledged this in court.
“The police have stated in court that they do not believe I committed any crime. No one has influenced anyone, nor is there any need to,” Latheef wrote in his post.
The Maldives Police Service and the PGO have not issued any statements regarding the case.
