Parliamentary Group (PG) of the People's National Congress (PNC) has been instructed not to summon ministers and heads of state-owned enterprises to parliament without the approval of President Mohamed Muizzu.

According to reliable sources, the directive was communicated to the group's leadership by parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Falah last week. A PNC PG member, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Falah conveyed the instruction during a meeting attended by parliamentary committee chairpersons.

“[Falah] informed the committee chairs that no minister or head of a government-owned company should appear in parliament without the president’s permission,” the member said.

Efforts to obtain an official statement from Falah were unsuccessful.

However, President Muizzu reportedly affirmed his support for Falah in a message sent to the PNC PG’s WhatsApp group last week. In the message, the president stated, “Falah is a person in whom I have full confidence. I assure the MPs that he will not do anything that I do not say.”

The directive follows a Finance Committee meeting on Tuesday, during which opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members moved to obtain details of the HA. Dhidhdhoo airport project from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). The motion was rejected by the committee, which has a PNC majority.
