Son never smoked, Sajidha says
She described the allegations as politically motivated and stated that they could negatively impact Umair’s education and personal development.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed on Saturday denied allegations that their son, Umair Mohamed Muizzu, has used vape or tobacco.
In a written statement announced at a press conference at Dhimyaath on Saturday, Sajidha responded to claims made by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist Mariyam Zubair, who accused Umair of involvement in the vape ban in the Maldives. Former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor attended the press conference on behalf of the family.
"I can assure you that Umair does not use vape or tobacco in any way," Sajidha said in the statement.
She described the allegations as politically motivated and stated that they could negatively impact Umair’s education and personal development.
"I note with concern that these developments have opened the door to possibilities that could adversely affect his future and lead to his safety being uncertain," she added.
The statement also addressed the targeting of the President’s other children, including his eldest son and his eight-year-old son, stating that it was difficult to accept such attacks.
Sajidha said she has not previously responded to criticism of her husband’s political views or responsibilities but now intends to take action against those targeting her children, particularly those underage.
Following the statement, lawyer Azima Shakoor announced that civil charges have been filed and noted that the situation could pose risks to Umair’s safety.
