Mohamed Areesh, a councillor from the Progressive National Congress (PNC), has been elected as the Deputy Mayor of Male City Council.
The position became vacant following the resignation of Ahmed Nareesh last week. During a council meeting held Sunday, the election of a new Deputy Mayor was on the agenda.
Areesh was the sole candidate for the position. In accordance with legal requirements, the council conducted a confidential ballot. All 16 councillors present voted in favour of his appointment.
Areesh represents the Maafannu North West constituency. He was initially elected to the council on the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket but joined the PNC in January last year after the change in government.
