Police have confiscated the phone of former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamman Waheed’s wife, Hidhfa Faiz, as part of an investigation into alleged corruption involving immigration officials.

A travel ban has also been imposed on two individuals in connection with the case.

Police are investigating allegations that immigration officials, including Shamman, used their positions to extort money from foreign workers. Shamman and three others have been arrested as part of the investigation.

A police spokesperson confirmed that a family member of Shamman’s phone was seized under a court order and that two individuals have been prohibited from leaving the country. Sources indicate that the seized phone belongs to Shamman’s wife, Hidhfa Faiz, though the identities of the two individuals subject to the travel ban remain unclear.

Police searched Shamman’s residence Friday morning and recovered more than MVR 500,000. He was arrested the following night and has been remanded in custody for 15 days.

Shamman is accused of releasing a foreign national detained with a large sum of money and subsequently extorting more than MVR 500,000 from the individual.
