Army begins Thalassemia Centre relocation to Orange Hiyaa
Patients and their families have recently raised concerns over the shortage of medicines and malfunctioning medical equipment.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has been assigned to accelerate the relocation of the Thalassemia Centre to Orange Hiyaa in Phase 1 of Hulhumalé, with work commencing on Friday.
The relocation follows a directive from President Mohamed Muizzu to expedite the move. The contract with the previous contractor had expired, leaving much of the work incomplete. The President decided not to renew the contract and instead handed over the project to the MNDF.
The MNDF’s electrical and mechanical engineering design team has revised the plans for Orange Hiyaa, incorporating changes to accommodate children. The work is scheduled for completion by April.
The relocation is being carried out under the supervision of the MNDF Service Corps, with specific responsibilities assigned as follows:
-
Military engineers from the Service Corps are overseeing the overall project.
-
MNDF electrical and mechanical engineers are handling electrical and air-conditioning installations.
-
MNDF Signals technical teams are responsible for ITC-related work.
Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy, along with senior MNDF officials, visited Orange Hiyaa on Friday to inspect the progress.
The Thalassemia Centre, currently in use for patient treatment, has deteriorated. Patients and their families have recently raised concerns over the shortage of medicines and malfunctioning medical equipment.
Following a visit to the centre, the President directed several administrative changes, including:
-
The appointment of a new Director-General with prior experience at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and a background in management.
-
The recruitment of a Deputy Director-General and a Director, as announced by the Ministry of Health.
-
The imminent hiring of a doctor for the centre.
-
The appointment of five nurses, announced yesterday.
-
The recruitment of additional administrative staff.
Further personnel changes include:
-
The removal of Faisal Ibrahim from the position of MBS Public Health Coordinator.
