Former Transport Minister and current Member of Parliament for Hulhumale’ South Constituency, Ahmed Shamheed, has expressed his interest in participating in the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential primary.

Shamheed shared his thoughts through messages sent to various MDP members and groups on Saturday, hinting at his potential candidacy.

He confirmed the circulating message, stating that while he has not finalised his decision, he is carefully considering the opportunity.

Shamheed emphasised that the decision is not yet concrete, but he is actively gauging the reaction of his closest allies and the general public

"It's not quite final yet. But there is interest. I haven't even discussed it with political leaders. I'm discussing it with close friends, the general public, and the MDP public," Shamheed remarked.

Shamheed’s political background is noteworthy, having served as the Transport Minister during the administration of former President Mohamed Waheed. He was previously aligned with the Jumhooree Party, a key opposition force at the time. However, his latest statements have sparked speculation about a shift in his political direction as he now looks to make his mark within the MDP.

The MDP presidential primary is shaping up to be highly competitive, with several prominent figures already expressing their intention to contest for the party's nomination. MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has made clear his interest in the presidential ticket, while MDP President Abdulla Shahid is actively campaigning for his candidacy.

There are also strong rumours that former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih may enter the race, with supporters of his presidency pushing for his return. Additionally, names like former Vice President Faisal Naseem, Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim, and former Vice President of Parliament Ahmed Saleem are being mentioned as potential candidates as well.
