The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the dismissal of two government employees who attended one of its recent rallies and has called for a nationwide protest in response.

According to a statement released by the party on Tuesday night, Moosa Mohamed, the manager of WAMCO’s Hithadhoo branch, and Mohamed Aflaal, a senior administrative officer, were both dismissed from their posts after participating in the MDP gathering. The party claims the letters of dismissal were issued today.

The MDP strongly criticised the move, asserting that political participation is a fundamental right enshrined in the Maldivian Constitution.

“Participation in political activities is a right of every Maldivian citizen,” the statement read. “Dismissal for participating in such an activity is a bright proof that job fear is extreme in the Maldives.”

The party has announced a nationwide protest scheduled for tomorrow, May 1st, in conjunction with Workers’ Day. The demonstrations aim to highlight the erosion of workers’ rights and the economic impact such dismissals have on families.

“As we celebrate Labor Day on 1st May, we call on all workers to come out and protest across the country against the government’s deprivation of workers’ rights and the distress of many families,” the statement urged.

Former President and current MDP leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also spoke out against the dismissals in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

He cited Article 30 of the constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to participate in political activities.

“Once again, the beginning of a culture of losing job security because of your political affiliation. I call on the government to stop this,” Solih said.
