Family Court case filed against MDP officials over remarks on pres son
The Civil Court case, Azima said, concerns the constitutional right to protection of name and reputation.
Legal counsel for First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has filed a case at the Family Court against Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and MDP activist Mariyam Zubair over remarks made regarding President Mohamed Muizzu’s eldest son, Umair Mohamed Muizzu.
Sajidha had previously stated her intention to initiate civil proceedings against Mariyam Zubair, following claims that vaping was banned in the Maldives due to the President’s son.
On 19 March, Sajidha’s lawyer and former Attorney General, Aishath Azima Shakoor, confirmed that a civil case had been filed at the Civil Court against both Mariyam Zubair and Fayyaz Ismail.
n a new statement released on Wednesday, Azima announced that a separate case had now been filed in the Family Court as well.
According to Azima, the Family Court case relates to alleged violations of the protections afforded to children under the Children’s Rights Protection Act and international agreements to which the Maldives is a party. The Civil Court case, she said, concerns the constitutional right to protection of name and reputation.
The MDP has responded by stating it will refer the cases brought by Sajidha and Azima to the relevant authorities. The party argued that Mariyam Zubair did not refer to a specific child during her remarks and that the identification of the child was made during a press briefing held on behalf of Sajidha.
